Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) has identified that by 2025, the agricultural sector will need to employ 50,000 more people, and around half of them will require a level 4 NCEA qualification or higher.
NZAgInvest Youth Day is dedicated to help fulfill this target by engaging young people with the agribusiness industry to help them better understand the variety of career opportunities available to them.
New Zealand AgriFood Investment Week, Talent Central, BCC (Building Clever Companies), and Massey University are working together to do just that: NZAgInvest Youth Day is the final stage of a new Agribusiness Scholarship Programme available to Manawatu secondary school students in 2017. The scholarships are presented by Talent Central, MPI and Proliant NZ.
High performing accounting, economics and business students, who likely haven’t considered agribusiness as a career option, will be individually selected for the Agribusiness Scholarship Programme: to experience the agribusiness industry from a real life perspective. Students will be taken on a number of agribusiness site visits and have the opportunity to interact directly with industry experts and young professionals from the likes of FMG, ASB, PGG Wrightson, NZX Agri, Fonterra and Massey University. The students will then draw on these experiences to develop and deliver presentations to the Primary Industry Capability Alliance (PICA) on how alliance members can actively engage with young people and encourage them into the industry. BCC will provide scholarship recipients with the training required to deliver clear and powerful presentations, ensuring their ideas and thoughts are heard by the wider agribusiness sector.
NZAgInvest Youth Day is the final step in the Agribusiness Scholarship Programme and is where the students will make their presentations. NZAgInvest Youth Day will also bring together young agribusiness professionals and current agribusiness tertiary students to take part in a question and answer session providing valuable insights for the participating students into this exciting industry. Held at Massey University, agribusiness professionals and business owners are welcome to attend to listen and learn from the students’ ideas.
